SIDEGATE

My grandad was a practical and resourceful man, traits richly evidenced in the way he worked around the farm. I am fascinated by the small marks left by him as caretaker, the man who maintained it and who for me in a sensory and visual sense, curated it.

His quirky building style evidences the honesty and simplicity of his work through using whatever he had to hand to ‘do the job’, the juxtapositions of contrasting materials coming together to get the job done.

The starting point for my pieces was his scrap pile - his source of materials to fix and construct things around the farm. I extracted simple objects and shapes, repurposing them into my own contemporary structures, exploring seemingly random arrangements to reference the form and surfaces of the farm adding subtle hints of his quirky joining’s and peeling layers representing years of ‘sprucing up’.

MOTION

My work investigates movement in a dynamic way through form, shape, posture and surface decoration. I aim to capture this movement through dynamic painterly surfaces applied to static objects that reference function.
